Our Services - Asbestos
Introduction
Asbestos is a term for a goup of minerals that form crystals as long, thin filaments. Being minerals, asbestos is mined from the earth. Asbestsos fibers are very heat, weather, and wear resistent, making them an excellent addition to many building materials. Unfortunately, inhalation of asbestos fibers is detrimental to human health. Asbestosis (scarring of lung tissue), lung cancer, mesothelioma (cancer of the tissue lining the pleural cavity), and other diseases may occur from inhalation and ingestion of asbestos fibers.
Many people consider asbestos to be a problem only in older buildings. This is not true. Building materials that contain asbestos can still be imported. In fact, asbestos is present in hundreds of building products. If these products are in good condition and are not disturbed, they likely do not pose a health threat.
State regulations require asbestos testing when renovations or demolitions are completed, and when buildings are used for fire burn exercises. For renovations, all disturbed asbestos-containing materials must be removed. For demolition, certain asbestos-containing materials must be removed. For fire burns, all asbestos-containing materials must be removed.
What We Do
Assessment and Testing: Only a state-certified asbestos inspector can legally collect samples for asbestos testing, unless the sample is collected by a homeowner in the home that they personally occupy. We hold the asbestos inspector certification. We assess properties for potential asbestos-containing materials, collect samples for laboratory analyses, and communicate with occupants and asbestos abatement contractors.
Clearance Testing and Project Monitoring: If needed, we monitor projects and collect and analyze air samples to ensure that an exposure to occupants is not occurring during the abatement process. Following abatement, we collect and analyze air samples to document that the asbestos has been adequately removed. By completing additional professional education, we have the ability to analyze clearance samples on-site to provide quick turn-around and project resolution.
